A teenagers' story set in a residential school in Germany, following the pranks they get up to and rivalries with the local municipal school.
Late in the film there are rehearsals for an end-of-year theatrical performance; Uli von Simmern (Daniel Müller) is playing a girl's part.
Afterwards in the open air, Uli gets teased about played a girl's role: "You look really sweet with your pigtails; you really should have been a girl."
In fact in a boyish prank, Uli makes a daredevil descent from the roof of the school using an umbrella as a parachute, and is badly injured. When the school play is performed, the girl's role has to be undertaken by someone else.
In the picture they are getting into a mock-up aeroplane -- the "flying classroom" of the film title.
