Fly By Night (1992)

Neighbourhood transvestites
A cynical and ultimately negative film about New York black men who try to make good as a rap band. Rich, the intelligent one (a powerful performance by Jefrey D Sams) was studying to get a college degree, but leaves his studies for the heady world of music. There is a lot of music in the film, which may be the attraction for many who watch it. The encounters with white business interests (which of course are money-grabbing and anti-black) aren't quite as stereotyped as I was expecting.

In the scene setting part of the film, some local transvestites appear, led by Michael Harris Austin's character, "transvestite" in the billing, and his only film credit.

Sam has been working out alone
Later in the film, a camp gay character called Sam (Yul Vasquez) is doing some weight training at home while partially in female mode ...

The film's full title is Fly by Night - Rap on the Wild Side.
