First a Girl (1935, UK)

Victor tells Elizabeth he can't go on
A British musical comedy version of the German film Viktor und Viktoria which was (much) later to form the basis of the Julie Andrews film Victor/Victoria.

A singer called Elizabeth (Jessie Matthews) is making a delivery to the theatre, but horror, the Female Impersonator Victor (Sonnie Hale, left in pic) is indisposed.

Victor resumes his old role
But the show must go on somehow, so Elizabeth is persuaded to do the man's act, as a man pretending to be a woman. She makes such a good job of pretending to be a woman that the theatre keeps her on.

At the end of the film Victor is well enough to resume his role and as he deoes so he uses Elizabeth's stage outfits.
