Der Eisbär (1998, Germany)

The boys try to pick up girls; this one seems friendly Til Schweiger's first film as a director. It's a comedy thriller, but I found it a little disconnected and the humour wasn't powerful enough to overcome the implausibilities of the story line.

The plot follows the rambling events of a night that starts with the theft of a car that has a time bomb in it. The time bomb is intended to eliminate a gangster, but the two low-life youths who steal it don't know about the bomb. It's a large, impressive car so they drive round the city trying to pick up girls, unsuccessfully. They only positive response they get is from a girl who already has a big car of her own ... and something extra as well.

Manuel Humm plays "transvestit".
