Las Edades de Lulù (1990, Spain)

Ely at the restaurant Lulu is 15 years old and starved of any real affection. Grateful for the attentions of an older friend of her brother, he introduces her to her first sexual experience. Years later he returns from teaching in the USA, and he seduces her yet again.

They marry, and he creates a private universe for her in which time has no meaning and where their lovemaking shields her from the complications of life. But Lulu tires of living in such an unreal world and leaves. She begins to hang out in sleazy bars where she plunges helplessly into a hell of dangerous, seemingly forbidden desires. She is hooked on exploring a sensuous, erotic life style and becomes out of control.

The film is powerful and explicit yet it is also tender and honest. Francesca Neri is beautiful as the vulnerable Lulu simply looking for love. The cast is good especially María Barranco (who won Spain's best supporting actress award) as Lulu's transvestite friend, seen in the first picture at a restaurant with Lulu and her husband.

The transvestite hooker reading a newspaper in the cafe As part of the exploration of gradually more extreme expressions of sex, Lulu reveals that the transvestite prostitutes fascinate her; this is mentioned when one of them comes into a cafe. Later Lulu and her husband go to the area where they look for clients, at first to hassle them; but they make friends with Ely.

The film has been released under the English title of The Ages of Lulu.
