Et il voulut être une femme (1981, France)
A documentary about transsexuals in Paris; much of the film is taken up with some of them speaking to camera about their life and hopes; many of them are from North Africa and most of them seem to work in the sex industry. There is also an operation sequence, with the surgeon describing what he is doing, although it is not all that clear.
There are some outdoor scenes too, and a few club scenes, with an extended artistic strip tease.
The film has a rather 1970's feel, and it is neutral rather than sympathetic; it is hard to escape the thought that it is exploitation, really.
