Der Einstein des Sex - Leben und Werk des Dr M Hirschfeld (1999, Netherlands)

The drag ball A Rosa von Praunheim film about the life of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, a German physician who established the field of sexology and fought German anti-sodomy laws in the late 19th century.

This is no merry "faction" entertainment, but a serious and sometimes plodding walk through his life's work. At first concentrating on male homosexuality, he widened his sphere to other forms of sexual non-conformity, and we see the word "transvestite" invented. I thought the sheer terror of discussing the existence of homosexuality in any positive way at the time was inadequately brought out, however.

Transvestism isn't neglected, and the beginnings of understanding of transsexuality is in there too. There is a drag ball at which many of his patients and friends appear.
