Desmundo (2002, Brazil)

Oribela tries to get a passage out of the country Hard times in sixteenth century Brazil, then a colonial outpost of Portugal. Some orphan girls were sent there by the Queen as brides for the men there.

Conditions were pretty bad, and this is faithfully portrayed in the film, but that doesn't necessarily make for good entertainment.One of the women, Oribela, decides to disguise herself as a man and return to Portugal.
