It's 1940 and England is under aerial attack; the army has set up a new mixed-sex air defence unit. Major S. Melly (Kenneth Connor) is a bit of a martinet and the soldiers to get their own back by pulling a series of tricks on him. The film has the advantage of having the marvellous Windsor Davies playing a Sergeant-Major; if ever there was a man sent on this earth to play a comic senior nco, it was Davies. When there is a sudden alert for approaching enemy aircraft, the battery has to spring into action. Davies shouts, "Sixpence for every one you shoots down, two bob if it is a German!"
Late on in the film, Connor's character is showering; the naughty soldiers substitute an army skirt and women's cap for his own uniform. When his shower is over, he obligingly puts this on to return to his quarters.
Unluckily for Connor, there is a General Officer Commanding inspection on at the time ... odd that he didn't know ... and Connor bumps into them. He tries to brazen it out as an ATS soldier, but the moustache was a bit of a giveaway.
