Chanel solitaire (1981, UK)

In fancy dress at the house party
A romantic drama based on the life of Coco Chanel, the famous couturier. Abandoned as a child by her father, she persevered and made something of her life by her own efforts; the film concentrates on the romantic side of things, but there is no happy ending.

At a house party, the horse breeder Etienne de Balsan (played by Rutger Hauer) is the host and he is persuaded to set Coco up in Paris, the beginning of her career. The party guests are in fancy dress, in de Balsan's case it is a female costume. When they sing "Happy birthday" to one of the guests, for some reason de Balsan takes his wig off.
