La Casa dalle Finestre che ridono (1976, Italy)

It was Laura all the time Stefano Rossi (Lino Capolicchio) is a young picture restorer. He has been commissioned to restore a church mural in a remote village near Ferrara. The picture shows a male figure hanging by his wrists, with two ghastly women onlookers.

Mysterious phone calls warn him not to carry out the work, but he does so, and gruesome happenings start to take place. Two gruesome sisters provide bodies for the painter to execute his preferred genre, of people near death and in agony. But one of the sisters, Laura turns out at the end of the film to be a transvestite.

The title ("The House with the Laughing Windows") refers only to a derelict house that has laughing mouths painted on the outside. The film has minor cult status in Italy, but like many Italian slasher films, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions about the plot.
