The Beauty Academy of Kabul (2004)

Liz Couvade has found this:

Director: Liz Mermin

A documentary on a group of American and Afghan expat women who start a beauty academy in wartorn Kabul. One beauty school student has short-cropped hair and is seen in several scenes wearing a western-style shirt and tie, sometimes with a blazer. While not the least bit unusual in a western setting (she could be a waiting tables at a nice restaurant), in a strict Islamic culture where the burka is still worn it seems particularly and intentionally mannish and provocative.
