Betty Blue (1986, France)

Interesting but sometimes difficult film about an easy going amiable man, Zorg, (Jean-Hugues Anglade) who falls in love with an impulsive girl, Betty (Béatrice Dalle). They seem made for each other and life is at first idyllic; but Betty becomes more and more erratic and unpredictable, and both their lives descend into a spiral.

There is, incidentally, an extraordinary amount of frontal nudity by both sexes in the film.

At the end of the film, she is committed to hospital over her depression, and he tries to get her released. Failing to do so he returns in female disguise to get her out. But there is no happy ending.

The original French title is 37º2 le matin.
