Better Than Chocolate (1999, Canada)

Judy
A Canadian film following the life of Maggie, a lesbian living in Vancouver. Maggie is in a relationship with Kim, when her interfering mother splits from her husband, and announces to Maggie that she is coming to live with her for a while, bringing Maggie's brother too.

As with many films based on minority groups, a general audience will find that too much prominence is given to reinforcing the group's own stereotype view of themselves and of the world, and not enough on plot and character development.

Peter Outerbridge plays Judy, a transsexual friend of the main characters. So far as I could see, Outerbridge has no previous form in this area, but played a convincing role as an improving transsexual. The dull and predictable plot started to look interesting when it appeared that a romantic interest might develop between Judy and the Mother, but this direction was not followed.
