Somewhat harrowing film, starting in Berlin in 1934. Max and Rudy are gay lovers. However Max becomes infatuated with an SA (brownshirt) man, but he gets murdered in their flat. This is the day before the putsch in which Ernst Röhm was ousted from power and a witchhunt was initiated to annihilate those the authorities disapproved of, such as gay people. Max and Rudy flee for their lives, but are quickly rounded up.
Max and Rudy fight for survival in Dachau concentration camp, but the feeling of terror was entirely absent for me. Some effort was obviously put into costumes and location, but the dialogue and direction, and the polystyrene rocks in the quarry scene, spoil it as drama. As a gay eulogy it works, but not as mainstream drama.
Sir Mick Jagger plays a cameo role as the drag singer, Greta, in the gay club s/he runs, at the beginning of the film. Plain looking men often become beautiful women when they cross-dress. Didn't work for Mick, though.
