Art film, so don't say I didn't warn you; Gawky Gary loves television and likes to do an act as Olivia Newton-John. Gary gets his makeup done by the mortuary assistant in the funeral parlour. The film cost $150 to make over twenty years and was a riot in New York at the Lincoln Center in July 2000. Honestly.
Liz Couvade provides the following, less flippant description:
Director: Trent Harris
Principal Cast: Groovin' Gary, Sean Penn, Crispin Glover
TG/CD Cast: Groovin' Gary (as Himself), Sean Penn (as Gary), Crispin Glover (as Larry)
This is a compilation of three of Harris's earlier short works on the same subject: The Beaver Kid (1979), The Beaver Kid #2 (1981), and the Orkly Kid (1985). The first segment is a documentary piece about an actual man (Gary) in a small rural Utah town who does an Olivia Newton-John impersonation. The second is a dramatic reworking of the story with Sean Penn as Gary. The third is another dramatic look, with Crispin Glover in the same role (the character's name is changed and the town is renamed and set in Idaho).
The whole trilogy is interesting artistically because it tracks the evolution of the filmmaker's approach to the subject. As a TV/CD myself, I liked The Orkly Kid because I thought it accurately (if unflatteringly) reflected the fantasy and self-delusion that TV/CD's wrap themselves in. Don't we all think we look prettier and sexier than we actually are?
