The story is about a genteel woman who flees a pregnancy scandal to the American West in 1860's and disguises herself as a man to survive.
The story is based on true events; the subject is Josephine (Jo) Monaghan (Suzy Amis).
She's not actually a transsexual, and the potential issues of passing as the other sex aren't especially drawn out in the film. Its greatest strength is a more realistic portrayal of life in the undeveloped areas of America at this time.
