Agnes und seine Brüder (2004, Germany)

Agnes meets Preminger Moritz Bleibtreu plays a college librarian who has problems satisfying his sexual needs -- he spies on young female students. Herbert Knaup plays a politician who has lost any affection for his wife and family. Martin Weiß plays the third sibling, who was Martin, and is now Agnes after having a gender reassignment operation.

The film is a strange, moody film and for much of the time the plot drifts purposelessly along. There is relatively little interaction between the three siblings, and for me the film fell flat.

However there is a redeeming feature -- the poignant scene when an American film star, Henry Preminger (played by Lee Daniels) comes to town. Preminger and Martin were lovers in America, but Preminger doesn't recognise Agnes; when she explains who she is, he says roughly that she is a woman now, and he is gay. However he and his roadies go back to the flat where Agnes is lodging with another woman, and there is a rather tense half hour while they drink coffee. During the half hour, Agnes realises that her past life is gone forever, while Preminger begins to yearn for it, and he invites Agnes to come out the back with him. Agnes realises that this is probably for a quick sex act and not for any reason of affection, and declines.

The title means Agnes and His Brothers, and it has been released in the USA under that title.
