Adaptation (2002)

Malkovitch on the set
Interesting, but over-long and self-indulgent film, intertwining the travails of a neurotic film writer, and an obsessive botanist, and the characters that are associated with them.

Numerous flashbacks, for example to "Hollywood, X million years ago" (shot of bubbling primordial soup) -- do nothing to settle the viewer's absorption of the plot.

At the beginning of the film, the screenwriter is assisting, or perhaps getting in the way of, the filming of Being John Malkovich. The particular scene being filmed is the restaurant sequence where everyone in the restaurant is Malkovich. Malkovich himself is shown in partial costume -- the dress and earrings but not anything else -- providing stage direction to the cast and crew.
