The hero's role is played by Kazuo Hasegawa, a former kabuki "male actress" and something of a matinee film idol with women. In the film he plays a kabuki "actress" Yukinojo Nakamura, who lives full time as a woman. Evidently it is quite proper for this to include courting a woman young enough to be her daughter.
The title comes from her mission in life, which is to avenge the deaths of her parents. The film is loaded with Japanese metaphors, and this makes it quite difficult for Western viewers to follow with much enthusiasm, although those who understand the genre enthuse greatly about it.
A DVD version of this film I viewed installed a program, supposedly PC-friendly DVD software, on my computer without my permission (when I clicked to accept a copyright notice).
In Japanese with English sub-titles; there are quite a lot of alternative titles:
Revenge of Ukeno-Jo, the
Revenge of Yuki-No-Jo, the, and
Revenge of a Kabuki Actor.
The Japanese title is Yukinojo Henge.
