Marieta (played by Mónica Cervera) is a pre-operative transsexual -- her male name is Adolfo Carpanta Orozco -- and she is trying to get together enough money for the gender reassignment operation that will get rid of the 20 centimetres of male genitalia.
The film is made with innumerable fantasy sequences and song and dance numbers, reminding me of Hedwig and the Angry Inch or even of a Bollywood production at times. Marieta lives platonically with a dwarf called Tomás (Miguel O'Dogherty) who tries to help her raise money.
Marieta's working life is mainly among prostitutes, but romance finds her when she encounters a worker in the fruit market, Raul (Pablo Puyol) -- and it's love at first sight.
The director, Ramón Salazar, has made a film that doesn't fit into the usual format of mainstream films; it's entertaining and compelling as long as you are not expecting a conventional screenplay.
It has also been released with the American English title of 20 centimeters.
